ALFRED EWING </b>(1855 - 1935) Head of the British Secret Service during World War I whose office intercepted the Zimmerman Telegram proposing a German alliance with Mexico in the event that the U.S. entered the war and announced the beginning of unrestricted submarine warfare beginning on Feb. 1, 1917. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Cambridge, Jan 14, 1932 responding to a letter, in part: "<i>...Some of their [newspaper] stories must be taken with the proverbial grain of salt, but it actually was by the staff under my charge that the Zimmerman messages were made out, and I think you are right in your estimation of their effect. It was essential in those days to keep the secret jealously guarded, and probably my part in it would not have become known had it not been publicly disclosed by the late Lord Balfour after the publication of Mr. Walter H Page's letters...</i>".
