ALFRED ELY, GENERAL JOHN H. MARTINDALE AND FREDERICK SEWARD
ALFRED ELY (1815-1892) U.S. Representative from New York. While witnessing the First Battle of Bull Run, Ely was taken prisoner by the Confederates and imprisoned in Libby Prison for nearly six months. War-date A.L.S from Ely to Gen. James Wadsworth, bearing a three line A.E.S. by Gen. JOHN H. MARTINDALE and a three-line A.E.S. by FREDERICK SEWARD Assistant Secretary of State. Ely's letter, 1p. 4to., Rochester, Nov. 18, 1862, asks that a pass be issued to one Joseph C. Blake who hopes to visit friends in the army. Both Martindale and Seward are agreeable. John H. Martindale (1815 - 1881) was a Union brigadier general who commanded forces at Malvern Hill, Cold Harbor and Petersburg until resigning due to poor health caused by typhoid fever.
