In the 1930s, festive processions were among Rodchenko's favorite photographic subjects. Responding to increased oppression in the Soviet Union, Rodchenko focused on positive subject matter and his innovative aesthetic to distract his viewers from such events. Throughout this decade, Rodchenko dedicated a great deal of energy to the propaganda magazine, U.S.S.R. IN CONSTRUCTION, largely controlled by Stalin and meant to circulate both domestically and internationally. The central role of this magazine and other propaganda publications at this time was to present "a shared vision of the future among the diverse ethnic and national groups that had been incorporated into the Soviet Union since the Revolution"(Victor Margolin, THE STRUGGLE FOR UTOPIA, Chicago, University of Chicago Press, 1997, p. 167).
