(54.6 x 39.4 cm) 1944 PROVENANCE Private Collection, PRAGUE Private Collection, NORTH AMERICA LITERATURE ALEXANDER ZHITOMIRSKY: POLITICAL PHOTOMONTAGE, 1994, San Francisco, 1994, p. 25 (illustrated) Strongly influential among artists and journalists in World War II-era Soviet Russia, Zhitomirsky contributed greatly to the struggle for peace, particularly by means of the photomontage technique. Zhitomirsky's photomontages, such as the present work, were widely circulated in the form of anti-Nazi propaganda leaflets. Regarding this particular image, also translated as simply KILL HIM, Zhitomirsky said, "This photomontage looks like a very documentary photograph. It was put together very simply: pasted to a photograph of me is a photograph of a German soldier's uniform and helmet. Pasted to the torn book which I hold is the cover of Hitler's Mein Kampf" (ALEXANDER ZHITOMIRSKY: POLITICAL PHOTOMONTAGE, 1994, San Francisco, 1994, p. 24).
