ALEXANDER H. STEPHENS
(1812 - 1883) Vice President of the Confederacy who urged moderation and negotiation with the Union. War-date A.L.S., 3pp. 8vo., Crawfordville, May 7, 1862 to his nephew. In part: "...I send you $40...sufficient to ghet you clothes and shoes...How much money have you now on hand?...Do not use a dollar for anything unless it is necessary...". Stephens then goes into great detail explaining to his nephew that he must write every day, paying attention to his penmanship and grammar. The elderly statesman even corrects the young man's grammar, setting forth an example in his response here. He closes: "...exert to be a scholar - enter a university...". Folds, else very good. Stephenes' wartime letters are rare.

Estimate: $250 - 350.
