ALEXANDER A. VANDERGRIFT
(1887-1973) United States Marine Corps general, he commanded the 1st Marine Division to victory in its first ground offensive of World War II, the Battle of Guadalcanal. For his actions during the Solomon Islands campaign, he received the Medal of Honor. Vandergrift later served as the 18th Commandant of the Marine Corps, and was the first U.S. Marine to hold the rank of four-star general while on active duty. A signed dinner program from the Navy League of the United States in observance of Navy Day at the Bellevue-Stratford in Philadelphia, Oct. 27, 1944, "A.A. Vandergrift Lieut. General U.S. Marines, Commandant Marine Corps". Include with this lot are the used ticket stub to the event and a small penant flag. Minor paperclip rust stains that do not affect signature.
