ALBERTO GIACOMETTI
Borgonovo 1901 – 1966 Chur, Switzerland (Swiss)
Portrait of Andre De Bouchet IV - circa 1965
Original Hand Signed and Numbered Etching.
Title: Portrait of Andre De Bouchet IV
Technique: Original Etching on BFK Rives paper.
Paper size: 20 x 14 cm / 7.9 x 5.5 in
Plate size: 16.5 x 12 cm / 6.5 x 4.7 in
Additional Information: This etching is hand signed in pencil by the artist at the lower right margin "Alberto Giacometti",
and hand numbered in pencil at the lower left margin "2/10".
This extremely rare work was prepared by Giacometti for the book "L'inhabite d'Andre Du Bouchet" to be used as one of the six etchings of the book.
However, it was finally not used in the book and therefore was not printed in a full edition.
Our impression is one of probably only 10 impressions that were printed by Giacometti of this plate, which makes it a scarce and rare work.
We were able to find only one other impression of this etching ever sold in the market.
André du Bouchet (1924-2001) is one of France's pre-eminent post-war poets. After studying at Harvard, du Bouchet returned to France and joined the circle of post-surrealist poets who founded the review L'Ephémère. His own idiosynchratic style of visual poetry, known as Poésie Blanche and characterised by individual lines isolated on a blank page, closely recalls Giacometti's fragile graphic expression. Du Bouchet produced several works dedicated to the artist, including his book Qui n'est pas tourné vers nous in 1972 and the monograph Alberto Giacometti: Dessins 1945-1965 published by Maeght in 1969. The artist in turn etched a series of four portraits of du Bouchet as well as providing illustrations for du Bouchet's Le Moteur Blanc, 1956 and Dans la Chaleur vacante, 1960.
Portrait d'André du Bouchet IV is one of a series of portraits of the poet by Giacometti. The first version was included in L'Inhabité, by du Bouchet, published by Jean Hugues, Paris, 1967.
Literature: "Giacometti. The complete graphics and 15 drawings. Catalogue Raisonne revised", by Herbert Lust, published by Alan Wofsy, San Francisco, 1991.
