(ALBERT WAGNER)
(1871-1928) "Butts Wagner" American professional baseball player and the older brother of legend Honus Wagner. Albert is often credited with getting Honus his first tryout, persuading his manager to take a look at his younger brother. Following his brother, young Honus had trained as a barber before starting his career in baseball. As for Albert, his career in baseball was brief - one year. He began the 1898 season with the Washington Senators and was later loaned to the Brooklyn Bridegrooms. On July 4, having replaced the injured Duke Farrell in center, he hit the only home run of his career, and with a double scored three runs in the 9-5 Bridegroom victory. Excessively rare 1906 photo of Wagner showing him chest, up in Montreal baseball uniform, image size 4" x 5 3/4", set onto a 6 1/4" x 9" photo mount. Photographer's stamp at bottom credits Bill Gallagher in Wagner's home town of Carlisle, Pa. A vandal has penned Wagner's name at the bottom of the image which a skilled conservator may be able to correct. Mount is heavily chipped and cracked, the image itself, neglecting the ink note, is quite good.

Estimate: $1,000 - 1,500.
