Hitler seeks new sources of oil in Austria

(1905-1981) Nazi German architect and Minister of Armaments and War Production, convicted of war crimes at Nuremburg. Scarce war-date T.L.S. on his official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berlin, Jan. 12, 1943 to Secretary of State Wilhelm Keppler. Speer's letter illustrates the Third Reich's desperate search for new sources of oil. In part: "...the Fuhrer brought up the topic of natural gas extraction in the Welser moorland, around Linz, which he remembers from his youth. The Fuhrer wishes the geologists to research if it is possible to find oil fields in the vicinity...Please send me the results of the research and available results...". Paperclip rust stain at top, else very good. If Hitler had searched only 75 or so miles north of Vienna he would have discovered the Matzen fields - the richest in all of Europe.

Estimate: $400 - 500.
