With the Bureau report by M.W. Stirling, Chief. Stirling became chief in 1928 after Fewkes retired. After his post as chief, Stirling became known for his discoveries of the Olmec tribe in southern Mexico and the subsequent article in National Geographic. During his expedition, Stirling and his team uncovered 20 large sculptured stone monuments that were believed to have been moved over 50 miles by the ancient Olmec tribe. He notes that "the people who accomplished this feat were engineers as well as artists" and that the stone monuments were "the finest examples of stone carving ever brought to light in ancient America" [comosatranslations.com].
