AGAIN THOMAS HART BENTON POSTER 1942
Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) 'Again - 'Mastery, not Brotherhood' - 'Control, not Share' - These are the Slogans of Our Enemies!', Litho in U.S.A., marked 'This painting has been made available in the Public Interest, by Abbott Laboratories, North Chicago, Ill.' 1942, approx. 23 x 21 inches. Poster has been professionally restored and linen backed. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Benton was inspired to paint an eight-part series called 'The Year of Peril'. Benton poured the emotion of the average American following Pearl Harbor into the series of paintings, evoking feelings of fear, paranoia, and grief. 'Again' is one in the series showing the brutality of German, Italian, and Japanese forces during the war. With the financial backing of AAA and Abbot Laboratories, Benton used these horrifying images to advocate for the United States to enter the war. However, despite the series’ widespread success, federal officers found the images to be too brutal and grotesque for widespread viewing and canceled the distribution of 'The Year of Peril'.
