AFSHARID: Nadir Shah, viceroy, 1729-1735, AV ashrafi (3.40g), Mashhad, AH1148, A-2735, gold coinage of Nadir Shah is much rarer than his post-coronation issues that commenced in the same year, AH1148, VF, RR, ex. Richard Accola collection. This type is actually anonymous, its legend meaning "By the grace of God, coinage in gold in Khorasan became the succor and support for the King of the Religion, 'Ali b. Musa Reza." In exchange for assisting the Safavid king Tahmasp II in reconquering Isfahan in AH1142, Nadir was pronounced viceroy in Khorasan and allowed to strike anonymous coinage. Earlier literature incorrectly assigned these coins to Tahmasp II (for pieces dated 1142-1144) and 'Abbas III (1145-1148).
