American, late 19th century. Signed LR TF Black, dated 93. Oil on board portrait of a battleship flying an American flag. Titled Cruiser Phila. U.S.N. Painted with Lucas C.P. Colors. 17 1/2"h. 23 3/4"w., in a period frame, 22"h. 28 1/2"w. Included is a brochure for Lucas carriage paints.

The Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships lists the cruiser Philadelphia (the fourth ship to be named after the city), having been laid down in March 1888, and designated the commanding ship of the North Atlantic Squadron.
