257. ADOLPH HITLER

hitler reorganizes top officer commands after assassination attempt
(1889-1945). Leader of Nazi Germany, one of 20th century’s most powerful and feared dictators for a time dominating most of Europe and North Africa. Important war-date DS in German, 1p, 4to, Berlin, Jul. 28, 1944. Just days after the bomb attempt on his life, Hitler reorganizes some upper-echelon officers’ commands, including that of Dietrich von Choltitz, who would soon take command of Paris. Specifically, Hitler orders that Artillery General Keiner assume command of General Army Administration, that Gen. von Zangen report for “special duty” to the C-in-C South West, and that von Choltitz: “...is relieved of the General Command of the Army Group D and assigned to return to Führer Reserves of Army High Command.” These are important appointments. A month later von Zangen would assume command of the Remagen sector, and lose the bridge over the Rhine there with disastrous consequences for the Nazis. Von Choltitz had previously fought with great distinction on the Russian Front and at St. Lo. Just days after this document was signed, he assumed command of the Paris district, on August 7th. Hitler gave von Choltitz direct orders to destroy the 68 bridges over the Seine and other military and cultural sites within the city. Von Choltitz led Hitler to believe that he would do so, actually wiring the bridges and Napoleon’s tomb, but in turn he quickly surrendered to French forces upon their arrival in the city. Interestingly, a final entry on the document was stricken—the reappointment of Gen. Henning von Tresckow, who was a fervent anti-Hitler plotter and chose von Stauffenberg to carry the bomb. Eight days before the date of this document and a day after the abortive bombing, von Tresckow drove to the front, faked a gunfight, and blew his head off with a grenade. Finally, Gen. Wilhelm Burgdorf who was a witness to Hitler’s Last Will during the final days in the bunker also signs the document, twice. An outstanding document in very fine condition.
