Comprised of mostly of TLsS and ALsS, this book is a superb and fascinating exemplar of Hitler’s “Strength through Joy” programs. A record of the date, donor, “vacationer,” number of days spent, etc. is provided together with a sample donation form imprinted on verso with list of 18 requirements for the sponsors and recipients during and after his stay, one of which is to thank the Führer in the manner stipulated. For example, Stormtrooper Fritz Funke from Hamm writes that in May 1935 he was sent to Hillesheim in the Eifel, a hilly region in western Germany where it was cold and rough, but he was at peace. There he met a comrade, troop leader Wilhelm Sachs, and immediately began a “particularly comradely relationship.” He describes the idyllic life in the mountain villages separated from the world. The two enjoy the poetry and hospitality of the deaf “people’s poet” Will Schirp and assures the Führer that even in the “high Eifel” he can be certain that German hearts prevail for all time with love and obedience for “an eternal Germany.” Both young men have signed at conclusion. With the letter are a newspaper clipping regarding Schirp’s 60th birthday and a sampling of his verses plus four outdoor snapshots of the two young comrades with the poet and his companion and also by themselves with a German Shepherd. Much more. In very good condition.
