ADM. ERNEST J. KING HAT INSIGNIA AND SWORD BELT BUCKLE
Pair of items attributed to Admiral Ernest J. King (1878-1956), commander in chief of the Atlantic fleet and chief of naval operations (1942-45). Included is a Navy officer's sword belt buckle, 2 1/2" wide, commonly used throughout the Thirties, maker-stamped by Horstman, Philadelphia. Also present is a Navy officer's hat badge by Vanguard with ribbon, a sterling silver eagle with gold-filled anchor and lines. Included is a copy of a May 5, 1948 letter sent by King in Washington to an obviously young collector. King states that most of his uniforms, medals, etc. have already been donated to the Naval Museum, , but obliges the young man by sending: "...my sword belt that I have used ever since my Academy days, also a naval officer's hat insignia...". A plastic sleeve with Dymo label-maker descriptive label also encloses a copy of the transmittal envelope, with the recipient's name excised. Provenance: TIME-LIFE Collection, The War Museum.
