ADAM FUSS (British, b. 1961) UNTITLED signed, dated, initialed and numbered in blue pencil on verso unique Cibachrome photogram 44 x 20 in. (111.8 x 50.8 cm) 1995 from the STAINED GLASS series PROVENANCE Private Collection, LONDON LITERATURE Michael Hue-Williams, FROM THE DARK ROOM, LONDON, 2001, pl. 23 (illustrated) Strongly influenced by the art that served religion, Fuss tackled the task of saving stained glass in a time of diminishing faith. Always enchanted by the magic of abandoned churches, Fuss first explored one when he moved to West Chiltington as a child and discovered Bedham, a settlement of workers' cottages. Isolated from the settlement by trees, a gothic-style church remained abandoned and almost swallowed by the forest. Fuss discovered fragments of the stained glass windows in the leaves surrounding this church. Later in life, Fuss discovered St. Luke's, another 19th-century church in decrepit condition, barely standing in East London. Fuss began making repeated pilgrimages to what he considered "a solar temple," collecting fragments of its stained glass windows. Stained glass is a perfect material to create photograms. The light passes through its translucence and the Cibachrome paper absorbs the colored light. The vibrancy of the colors of these two images illustrates how perfect stained glass really is for the process, which Fuss had already mastered.
