ADAM FUSS (British, b. 1961) UNTITLED (REMEMORY) unique Cibachrome photogram hinged into artist's gray mat 7 9/16 x 5 15/16 in. (19.2 x 15.1 cm) 1995 from the stained glass series PROVENANCE Robert Miller Gallery, New York Private Collection, NEW YORK exhibition new york, Robert Miller Gallery, adam fuss: rememory, May 1995 (illustrated on exhibition announcement) Widely credited with the reinvigoration of the photogram technique, Adam Fuss began working with stained glass in 1989. Inspired by the ruined windows he observed in Saint Luke's Church in East London, Fuss isolated shards of stained glass on photosensitive paper, masterfully exploiting their inherent translucency and chromatic richness. The present work, for example, features a glowing gilt inscription of the word "MEMORY." Emerging from this tomb-like frieze of Gothic script, a child's outstretched arm gestures into a silver void. By combining these fragments of text and image, the artist creates a haunting meditation on loss and yearning. As Eugenia Parry has observed, even the silver support contributes to the poignancy of this image. "The gray backgrounds, residues of silver salts, convey the requisite dimness for truthful seeing and knowing. As in the metaphysical flora, the silver shimmers like the surface of a daguerreotype. Fuss likes the lunar effect: it suggests viewing Saint Luke's at night. More than this, the color is integral to conveying the somber state of the failed house of God and his mournful experience of its debris" (Eugenia Parry "Less of a Test Than Earth: The Art of Adam Fuss," ADAM FUSS, Santa Fe: Arena Editions, 1997, p. 26).
