Many threads of mid-19th Century life in the U.S. and Europe converge in this fascinating person. Born in Texas she started early with a theatrical and literary career. She married a Jewish musician and converted to Judaism. She had a number of other brief marriages including the boxer John Heenan. Her writing involved connections with many of the major literary figures of the day, including Whitman, Mark Twain, George Sand, Dickens. Her lovers included the elder Dumas, Swinburne. As an actress her most sensational role was in Mazeppa, where she rode a horse appearing to be nude. Here she is seen in one of her other major roles.
