[ABRAHAM LINCOLN]
Superb platinum print portrait of Abraham Lincoln from an 1860 photograph by Alexander Hesler, printed by George B. Ayers in 1881. Image size 8" x 10" overall, blind embossed at bottom: G. B. AYRES COPYRIGHT 1881". The verso bears Ayres' manuscript notation: "Copyright Geo. B. Ayres Phila.". Some paper tape remnants remain affixed to margins on verso, otherwise fine condition. On June 3, 1860, Lincoln sat for photographer Hessler inside the former Old State House in Springfield, Illinois. Nominated for President by the Republican National Convention in Chicago only two weeks prior, Lincoln knew an updated represenative portrait of himself was needed for the benefit of potential voters who might want to see his likeness. Of the four known portraits Hessler shot that day, this image has become the most famous.

Estimate: $1,000 - 1,500.
