<b>197. ABRAHAM LINCOLN</b> (1809 - 1865) Sixteenth President of the United States who led the Union through the Civil War and emancipated the slaves, assassinated. Rare A.D.S. "<i>A. Lincoln</i>" a check made out and signed by Lincoln, 7 1/2" x 2 1/4", Springfield, Apr. 16, 1859, drawn upon the Springfield Marine & Fire Insurance Co. for the sum of $5.00 made payable to a "<i>Miss Mary Remann</i>". On the same day as he penned this check, Lincoln wrote Thomas J. Pickett: "<i>I must, in candor, say I do not think myself fit for the Presidency...I really think it best for the cause that no concerted effort...should be made...</i>". Of course, exactly six years and one day later, Lincoln would expire from a wound at the hands of John Wilkes Booth. Punch cancel near left margin, with an exceptionally clean and nearly invisible cut cancel with no paper loss affecting two letters in signature, a bright and very clean note.<b>$8,000-10,000</b>
