ABBASID: 'Ali Ibn 'Isa Ibn Mahan, as independent Emir (799-806), AR Dirham (2.86g), Balkh, AH 190. I
ABBASID: 'Ali Ibn 'Isa Ibn Mahan, as independent Emir (799-806), AR Dirham (2.86g), Balkh, AH 190. In the sole name of 'Ali Ibn 'Isa, without citing the caliph Al-Rashid nor any of his heirs. Extremely rare variety where 'Ali Ibn 'Isa is cited as "Emir" (commander), unlike the more common, but still very rare, "mawla amir al-mu'mineen" (chief of the commander of the faithful). A--- (unpublished). Excellent strike, lustrous, about uncirculated. Unpublished and of the highest rarity.

All examples of 'Ali Ibn 'Isa appearing in past auctions (MKIC Auction 2, Baldwin's Islamic Auction 24, Stephen Album Auction 18) cite 'Ali Ibn 'Isa as "mawla" (chief) of the caliph Al-Rashid, who is cited as Commander of the Faithful. This specimen, however, cites 'Ali Ibn 'Isa as "emir" (commander) without any title or referral to the Abbasid caliph Harun Al-Rashid. Stephen Album's checklist only lists 'Ali Ibn 'Isa (A-219) as being a client (mawla) under the caliph. Therefore, the specimen presented here is unpublished, and quite possibly is only the second specimen known in existence, after a less attractive and scratched piece listed in Zeno (#175461). The removal of the title "mawla" (referring to his cliency under Harun Al-Rashid) has likely occured in the latter part of AH 190, which is a possible time when 'Ali Ibn 'Isa seeked complete independence from the Abbasids. It is historically known that 'Ali Ibn 'Isa has caused so much trouble in these short years that in 809 CE, Harun Al-Rashid himself felt it necessary to intervene and depose 'Ali's authority by replacing him with Harthama Ibn A'yan.
