AARON SISKIND (American, 1903-1991) MORELIA, MEXICO (PEELING WALL) titled, dated and signed "Morelia, Mexico 1955 Aaron Siskind" in pencil on verso various notations on verso vintage gelatin silver print 13 1/2 x 17 in. (34.3 x 43.2 cm) 1955 PROVENANCE Light Gallery, NEW YORK Private Collection, NEW YORK In 1956, not long after Siskind made this photograph, he wrote about his intentions. "When I make a photograph I want it to be an altogether new object, complete and self-contained, whose basic condition is order-(unlike the world of events and actions whose permanent condition is change and disorder). ... First, and emphatically, I accept the flat plane of the picture surface as the primary frame of reference of the picture. The experience itself may be described as one of total absorption in the object. But the object serves only a personal need and the requirements of the picture. Thus, rocks are sculptured forms; a section of common decorative iron-work, springing rhythmic shapes; fragments of paper sticking to a wall, a conversation piece" (Siskind, "Credo," SPECTRUM, vol. 6, no. 2, 1956, pp. 27-28).
