A wood netsuke of two monkeys.
By Koichi, School of Toyomasa, Early 19th century. Fighting over a bunch of biwa fruit, the hair-work boldly carved and the eyes double inlaid in dark red horn with black pupils. Traces of light red paint highlight the mouth of one monkey and the eyes and ears of the other. The cord attachment made through natural openings. Signed on a raised oval reserve, Koichi.1 7/8in (4.6cm). Provenance: Purchased from Joseph U. Seo, 1954. Illustratted in the MCI page 357.
