A wood netsuke of an owl and two owlets.
By Kano Tomokazu, Gifu, Mid 19th century. Perched on a branch, eyes double-inlaid in grey horn with black pupils, on either side is a stump from which pops up an Owlet whose eyes are inlaid in black. The feathers are well carved and the tree limbs are surmounted by leaves and tendrils, very little wear but the underside is deeply patinated. Signed in an oval reserve, Tomokazu. 1 1/2in (3.9cm). Provenance: Sotheby's, New York, October 6, 1982.
