A wood netsuke of an oni.
Early 19th century. Oni sheltering himself from the New Year's beans by holding a torn kasa over his back. His eyes double-inlaid in pale horn with black pupils, several beans are inlaid in ivory with black highlights and are attached to the kasa, and his mouth is open in fear, the himotoshi use natural openings. The wood is a rich golden brown and nicely patinated. In the manner of Kokei and Tomokazu. 7/8in (2.1cm). Provenance: Sotheby's, London, December 6, 1965; Lot 216.
