A wood netsuke of a yama-inu(wild dog).
By Tomotada, Kyoto, , Late 18th century. Eating a haunch of venison. The eyes inlaid in ivory with black pupils, the rib cage well defined and darkened for effect, the hair finely etched. Signed under the right rear paw in a rectangular reserve, Tomotada. A nearly identical model (if not the same) is shown in Ueda's Shumi no Netsuke (1934) as Figure 61 and again in Netsuke no Kenkyu (1943) as Figure 46 and reproduced in the MCI on page 917. The original tag from seller reads "Ueda 46" and may indicate that it was that piece. 1 3/8in (3.6cm). Provenance: Purchased from Joseph U. Seo, 1954.
