A wood netsuke of a toad.
Attributed to Ryusansai Issan, Iwashiro, Early 19th century. Sitting on an upturned straw zori, eyes inlaid in black, with a natural himotoshi formed by the end of the sandal cord, nicely worn and patinated to a reddish color in places. Signed on the underside in a polished reserve, Issan. A similar piece illustrated in Davey, Fig. 806. 7/8in (2.1cm). Provenance: Purchased in Tokyo, 1951.
