A wood netsuke of a tiger.
By Kano Tomokazu, Gifu, Early 19th century. Sitting licking his left front paw while his tail curls beneath him and between his other legs, eyes inlaid in horn or amber with black pupils, the incisors inlaid in ivory, uniformly good hair-work with almost no wear, the stripes have been applied with black ink. The himotoshi occur naturally under the tail. Signed on the right rear foot in a polished oval reserve, Tomokazu using the 5-stroke Tomo. A nearly identical example is shown in Lazarnick on page 1155. 1 1/8in (3cm). Provenance: Purchased from Joseph U. Seo, 1958.
