A wood netsuke of a skull with ivory teeth.
By Hogen Tadashige, Nagoya, Mid 19th century. There are six teeth inlaid in ivory and eight sockets that have been left empty, one of which is partially filled with ivory. At the base of the skull and surrounding the external occipital protuberance is the ukibori signature. SIgned to the right of the protuberance, Hogen, and to the left, Tadashige.1 3/4in (4.6cm). Provenance: Illustrated, with signature, in Lazarnick page 1061, following his discussion of the previously incorrect reading of Tadashige as Tadayoshi. Exhibited: the Student Center (August 29 - September 25, 1960)
