A wood netsuke of a monkey with nacre eyes.
Attributed to Tanaka Minko, Tsu, Mid 18th century. Seated with legs crossed and rocking backwards with mouth wide open and arms wrapped around his lower legs to keep himself from falling overe, eyes inlaid in nacre, deeply cut hair-work, a thick flowing mane that extends from the head down the back and under the body where it forms a natural himotoshi. Well patinated and worn. Unsigned. A similar piece signed Minko illustrated in Davey, Fig. 643. 1in (2.5cm).
