A wood netsuke of a monkey and snake.
By Tanaka Minko (1735-1816), Tsu, Mid 18th century. Engaged in a struggle, the monkey's head is turned around to meet the gaze of the snake's head that emerges from under the monkey's rump, the himotoshi use natural openings. The monkey has the same rough-hewn hair-work that one expects from Minko's animals. Signed on the right rear foreleg, Minko. 1in (2.5cm). Provenance: Sotheby's, London, November 3, 1969; Lot 190.
