By Masakatsu (d.1899), Yamada, Mid 19th century. The beasts four feet are shown with claws, seemingly copied from the drawing of the same in the Hokusai "Manga". Signed on the belly, without reserve, but in a space cleared of hair-work, Masakatsu.A nearly identical model was in the Hindson Collection, Sale No. 6, lot 1018 (Davey, Fig. 694) 1 5/8in (4.1cm). Provenance: Ex Richards collection. Purchased from R. Koscherak, 1957.
