A wood netsuke of a coiled rat.
By Masakiyo, Yamada, Mid 19th century. With one paw to his ear and another holding his nose while the tail wraps around his body, he hair-work is beautifully engraved and the eyes are inlaid in dark horn. SIgned at base of tail in rectangular reserve, Masakiyo. The Masanao lineage is easily seen in this typical example of the school, especially the influence of his teacher, Masakatsu. 1 1/4in (3.3cm).
