By Ikkan (1817-1893), Nagoya, Mid 19th century. Tightly closed, the spiral markings of the shells well-defined and stained black for effect, the umbos partially finished with white gesso to indicate where the periostracum has worn off. The natural openings in the design are used for the hinotoshi.Signed on an oval ivory inlaid plaque, Ikkan. 1 1/8in (2.9cm). Provenance: Ex Richards collection. Purchased from R. Koscherak, 1957.
