A wood netsuke of a Sennin on a shishi.
Mid 18th century. Seated atop the shishi, with a gourd. Unsigned. There is a nearly identical piece, also unsigned, in the Behrens Collection, No. 4316 and illustrated on Plate LV. Joly describes that piece as follows: "Wood, old sage seated on a lion, probably intended for Hattara Sonju, although there is a shoulder cape of leaves, not usually associated with the Arhats. The carver who made this piece specialized in Sennin and Rakans, with a peculiar treatment of the face, thin limbs, and a base with a large hole, being either an animal or a rock. I have never seen any of his pieces with a signature; the colour of the wood is also peculiar to himself." 1 3/4in (4.4cm).
