A wood netsuke of Jurojin.
By Gyokuzan, Tokyo, Mid/late 19th century. Seated, examining a Buddhist scroll that he has spread out over his crossed legs. Nicely detailed hair-work in the beard, diaper-work pattern on the scroll, and stippling on the underside, himotoshi are of unequal diameter and have carved borders with the larger one being countersunk. Signed on the underside between the himotoshi, Gyokuzan. 1 1/4in (3.3cm). Provenance: Ex Richards collection (purchased by them July 5, 1926 at Hotel Drouot-Nievolo). Purchased from R. Koscherak, 1958.
