1853 Jack Totheroh accepted the challenge of collecting small California gold not only by die marriage (the BG number), but also by differences in the appearance of the die during use (the die state). In foggy San Francisco, the makers of these coins were at their wits’ end to fight off rust, and frequently resorted to grinding the die to polish it off, with indifferent success. Makers also pressed on with dies damaged by die clashing or die breaks and even "cuds," in order to meet demand. Such "imperfect" pieces are a testament to conditions prevailing in 1850s California. Dull gold with highlights of blue in field and red in recesses of design. PCGS AU58. Serial# 30035058 Totheroh Collection HKA#63312
