A tabernacle frame, 2nd half 19th century,
A tabernacle frame, 2nd half 19th century, designed by Luigi Annoni, executed by Angelo de Amici, engravings after inventions by Giovanni Brambilla. The ebonised frame with ivory and mother-of-pearl inlays was probably made for the World Fair held in Paris in 1867 and originally served as a family altar. Delicately carved aryatids carrying flowers support an architrave with flying birds holding floral festoons in their beaks. This Romanticist aspect of the decoration is opposed to the Renaissance with its plaques representing Dante, Ariosto, Petrarch and Tasso. The base shows the Pantheon, St. Peter's and the Colosseum in Rome. Floral and foliate ornaments as well as oval medallions with putti applied to the remaining elements. All of the ivory inlays feature delicate engraving. Minute traces of wear, one loss. This frame is a rare example of outstanding craftsmanship dating from the second half of the 19th century. 16.3 x 12.3 cm (40 x 28 cm), (GL). EURO 4.000 - 5.000 US $ 3,400 - 4,300
