A set of six George II walnut dining chairs, each with a padded back and seat on cabriole legs, with pad feet, two upholstered in 18th century tapestry, and four with 18th century crewelwork Prov: Chawton Great House, near Alton, Hampshire and thence by descent. Chawton Great House was the home of Edward Austen Knight (1767-1852), brother of the novelist Jane Austen (1775-1817). Edward was adopted by his children's cousins, the Knights, taking their name and inheriting their estate at Chawton. In 1807 Edward Austen Knight gave his widowed mother the use of a small house in Chawton. Mrs Austen, lived there with Jane and Cassandra for some decades during which Jane Austen published her novels. Edward's eldest daughter, Fanny, kept diaries and from these it can be seen how often Jane, in particular, is recorded as dining and sleeping overnight at Chawton Great House. Therefore it is likely that these were the chairs upon which Jane sat in the drawing room during her frequent visits to her brother and his family £6,000-8,000
