A rare pair of Derby chocolate cups and covers and one stand, circa 1794, of cylindrical tapered form with entwined gilt lattice handles, each enamelled with oval black on moonlight titled scenes of the 'First Lesson of Love', depicting mother and daughter beside a doorway watching a pair of courting doves, the other, Second Lesson of Love, with lady and gentleman seated in a landscape, within lattice gilt borders on a lavender ground, each reverse painted with titled black on moonlight views 'On the Trent, Derbyshire' and 'View near Duffield, Derbyshire' within a fluted and gilt star banded rim border, with domed covers and one stand, blue crown cross batons mark in blue and no 231, titled in blue and gilding mark V, the stand with puce mark, both covers lacking ring knop finials, height 11.5cm, 4 1/2 inches. See Illustration Footnote:- This extremely rare pair of chocolate cups can be compared to the only other known pair which had once belonged to John Haslam which he purchased in 1869 at the sale of the late Marquis of Hastings. They were subsequently sold by his executors on his death in 1882 and many years later in 1923 were bequeathed to the British Museum. The current pair precisely match pattern number 231 of the Old Derby Pattern book. Pattern number 231 would have been introduced at a time when James Banford was one of the most accomplished painters who executed fine figure and landscape subjects, Pattern numbers 232 and 233 in the old Derby pattern books, both for classical figures are ascribed to Banford. It is the initial choice of many, including John Twitchett, that Banford would have been the painter of pattern 231. The First Lesson of Love shows a caring mother standing beside her daughter, her arms raised in mock horror, as together they watch the antics of a pair of courting doves. An admirer of the young lady or perhaps even her father looks on from a darkened doorway, not wishing to be involved in such a delicate subject. The Second Lesson of Love shows that a demure young lady has been replaced by one of poise and elegance. Beautifully dressed, she is happy to forego her work at the spinning wheel to saviour the meeting with her suitor. She is unperturbed when he places one arm around her shoulders. She in turn places a hand on his knee. Estimate on request
