9 7/8 x 13 1/2 in. (25.1 x 34.3 cm)
painted circa 1919
Estimate: $15,000-20,000
Provenance
The artist Sergio Stella (his nephew) Richard York Gallery, New York Private Collection
The years 1918 to 1920 were among the most productive years of Joseph Stella's career. In preparation for one of his most complex and important paintings, the symbolic Tree of My Life, 1919-1920 (Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Barney Ebsworth Foundation and Windsor, Inc, St. Louis), Stella began numerous drawings, pastel and silverpoint studies for the hundreds of plants, flowers, and fruits he would incorporate into the final painting. The delicacy and spareness of these silhouetted, floating specimens is oriental in feeling. At the same time, the almost scientific accuracy and illusionistic veracity with which Stella rendered his subjects recalls eighteenth-century botanical illustrations. The undeniable sexual references in Still Life with two Peaches is typical of the sensual and symbolic forms seen in many of these organic renderings.
We are grateful to Beth Venn for cataloguing this lot.
