Estimate: $100,000-150,000
Provenance
Christie's, New York, December 5, 1980, lot 32 Private Collection
This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist's work in preparation by the Newington-Cropsey Foundation, Hastings-on-Hudson, New York.
In the early 1870s, Jasper Cropsey turned from topographical descriptions of the landscape to more generalized views. These paintings are frequently of the surroundings near his summer home, "Aladdin" at Warwick, New York, which was completed in 1869. In Hazy Afternoon, which most likely depicts Lake Wawayanda, a palpable, luminous light permeates the tonal landscape punctuated by accents of brilliantly colored foliage. In this compostion, as well as in Misty Afternoon (Hersen Collection), which was also painted in 1873, Cropsey introduces for the first time mallards rising from the lake, a motif repeated in Wawayanda Waters, 1875 (unlocated), but not used by the artist again until his paintings of the late 1880s and early 1890s. The path of the ducks follows the shore of the lake that is also reinforced by the artist's diagonally placed signature.
Our thanks to Dr. Kenneth Maddox for cataloguing this lot.
