New York, An American Place Gallery, Arthur Dove: New Oils and Watercolors, March 23- April 16, 1937 Boston, Museum of Fine Arts, Works of Ten American Watercolor Painters, 1939 Soon after Arthur Dove moved from New York City in 1933 to a farmhouse in Geneva, New York, he took up the practice of sketching in watercolor out of doors. While he had mixed feelings about leaving city life for a quieter, rural existence, his new surroundings presented him with a host of new imagery for his work. In 1935-1936 Dove completed several paintings of cows (Cows in Pasture, Phillips Collection; Cows and Calves, Newark Museum; and A Chewing Cow, collection unidentified). His watercolor sketch, Brown Cow, while not a direct study for any of the paintings, shows Dove's love of organic, rhythmic forms. A seemingly spontaneous sketch, the work is nonetheless masterfully composed - the large cow in the center is balanced by smaller portions of cows that emerge from the edges of the picture plane. <p>We are grateful to Beth Venn for cataloguing this lot.
