WILLIAM HART
(1823-1894)
Grand Manan
signed "Wm. Hart" (lower right)
oil on canvas
9 1/2 x 18 1/8 in. (24.13 x 46.05 cm)
painted circa 1860
Estimate: $25,000-45,000
Provenance
Private Collection, circa 1960
The steep basalt cliffs of the island of Grand Manan stand like a sentinel at the mouth of Canada's Bay of Fundy. Although the island's spectacular geology and swirling tides attracted the attention of a number of American painters in the mid-nineteenth century - most notably, Frederic Church - by the early 1860s, they had become one of William Hart's favorite subjects.
Here, Hart selects a view on the island's sheltered lee side, away from the cliffs and crashing waves. By focusing on the wave-softened rock forms with their unusual colors, and on the gently rolling breakers of the harbor, Hart turns the scene into a quiet meditation on geologic time.
With thanks to Dr. Bruce Chambers for cataloguing this lot.
