Estate of artist Gifford Estate Sale, Chickering Hall, New York, April 28 and 29, 1881, lot 21, no. 71 (as Matlock High Tor and dated August 6, 1855) William Barr Private Collection, 1980s
The Gifford Estate Sale catalogue dates High Tor on the Hudson as August 6, 1855 - a period when Gifford made frequent sketching trips along the Hudson River often in the company of his friend Henry Ary. As with many of his other field sketches, Gifford experiments here with compositional ideas. The eye is led inward through the dark screen of trees and then dramatically upward to a castle-like crag, brilliantly illuminated by the afternoon sun. The surging verticality of the composition is subtly reinforced by the boatman's white shirt and its reflection, by the tall pine above his head, and by the boulder on the shore in the middle ground.
We are grateful to Dr. Bruce Chambers for cataloguing this lot.
