Meyer Jonasson, New York City of Omaha, nebraska Private Collection, Connecticut
Exhibited
Paris, Paris Salon, 1891 (Awarded Third Class Gold Medal) New York, National Academy of Design, 1895
During the second half of the 1880s and for most of the 1890s, Louis Paul Dessar was active in France, where he studied in Paris at the Academie Julian and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, and maintained a summer house at Etaples in the Fontainebleau region. His paintings from these years typically portray peasants, farmers, or fishermen in rural settings that are bathed in moody dawn or evening light.
The Departure of the Fishermen in the Early Morning, in its size, complexity, and poignant subject matter, could be considered the tour de force from this period in Dessar's career, and the work's importance was recognized by Adolphe William Bouguereau who awarded it a Third Class Gold Medal at the 1891 Paris Salon.
Dessar brilliantly contrasts the austerity of the scene with the richly glowing candlelight, symbolizing the deep spirituality of the fishermen and their families as they gather to bless the fleet. In Dessar's time, such humble subject matter inspired compassion for the plight of the fisherman and his timeless struggle to earn a livelihood from the sea.
