A pottery netsuke of a Beshimi mask.
By Shimizu Sekisen 1st, Gifu, Late 19th century. A Bizenyaki mask of Beshimi, finished with a copper glaze and silver eyes. Impressed seal on the crossbar, Sekisen. Ueda says that Sekisen was engaged in the production of Onko ware at Akasaka, Mino which is in the present-day Gifu Prefecture. 1 7/8in (4.8cm). Provenance: Purchased at auction, Hauswedell, Hamburg, Germany, May 20, 1963.
