A pair of octagonal meat plates, with central polychrome armorial crest and motto "Spero meliora", with gilt repeat barb frieze and border with sprays of summer flowers (one with rubbed gilding, one small rim chip and five minor under-rim chips; the other with rubbed gilding, two minor chips and two minor under-rim chips) 22.5cm diameter £500-700 Note: The arms are of Sandilands. This service probably made for a younger son of the 7th baron, Lord Torpichen, either Patrick, born in 1708, perished on an East Indiaman; Alexander, a major in the 21st Regiment, who was at Dettingen and Fontency and died in 1776; or Robert, an officer in the Scottish Brigade of the Dutch Service, who married Grisel, daughter of Sir Thomas Kirkpatrick of Closeburn Bt and died in 1791, leaving a son who succeeded as the 10th Lord Torphichen.
