A pair of fairly large FIGURES, pseudo Chelsea, 18th C gold anchor period, ornate Rococo bases of centre shell and scroll feet, she is seated, playing a mandolin, missing its top terminal, the quizzical sheep beside her has lost an ear, the substantial bocage behind has leaf and flower petal chips. He is seated, above a matching Rococo base, he plays a crude bagpipe, what's left of a dog is seated beside him, top half missing, the bocage behind, has leaf and flower petal chips, both pieces marked with a large (0.9cms) gold anchor, possibly continental - Samson of Paris! Bergesen's Price Guide says : "This (gold) anchor has appeared on forgeries and reproduction, but is usually too large (so that you can't miss it)", we suspect these could be as late as 1930's. Nathaniel Harris "Porcelain Figurines" has this to say : "incidentally, the presence of a gold anchor is no guarantee that a particular piece was made at Chelsea, even if it is not a forgery, the gold anchor mark was occasionally used later at Derby, and also by some 19thC factories on the continent".(2)
